Product photography can instantly lift your brand giving your products more page views and higher sales. If you can’t afford to hire a professional photographer, there are some quick and easy ways to achieve great images using a smartphone. The best camera is the one you have with you and smartphones today have amazing cameras. There are also a few apps that can help you edit images to perfection.


Taking the Photos

  • Light – Photograph your products in a bright environment. Natural light is the most ideal, so find a shooting place near a window with lots of sunlight. If you are shooting outdoors, early mornings and late afternoons are the best time to shoot while the sun is slightly lower in the sky.
  • Background – Use a neutral background and remove any distractions. White backgrounds are a popular choice for product photography and this can be done using a white table or creating your own white backdrop.

  • Composition – Make sure your product is clear to see and gives potential buyers an accurate view of what’s included. Take a handful of shots at different angles. For example, if you’re selling a book, you will want to take a photo of the cover, the content, and a side view.  Having a handful of photos to showcase your product will help customers to make a faster purchase decision.  When selling on Educents, we recommend uploading at least 3 images per product.
  • ‘Camera To Product’ Angle –  The ‘camera to product angle’ is the angle you’re shooting from and there are a couple of common angles we’ve seen. Front angle shots are taken directly in front of the product, while high angle shots are taken from a bird’s eye view above the object. The High Angle shot tends to be the best angle to represent products.

  • Use a Tripod – To avoid any blur or shakiness, consider using a tripod as a solid foundation. These can be found online for $10-$15. You can also use a DIY tripod with common household items.
  • Crop – Product photos on Educents are displayed as square images. To save time, shoot in Square mode to avoid cropping later.

  • Don’t Zoom – Move your feet. Get close to the object and avoid using the zoom to capture the clearest image.
  • Focus the Camera – Prior to taking the picture, tap the focal point of your product on the screen to tell your camera where to focus.


Editing & Extras

If you’ve followed the recommendations under Taking the Photos, you won’t need to spend too much time editing. However, there are a few apps worth mentioning to take your images to the next level.

  • Pixc Pixc will remove the background of your mobile photograph and have your photo touched up within 24 hours. They provide a quick, efficient and easy way for you to have retail-ready photos.  Your first photo is free. After that it’s $3/per photo or you can purchase a package starting at $79 for 40 images.
  • Snapseed – Snapseed is Google’s photo editing app. It’s a free app you can download from the app store. There are a number of editing tools within the app, but there are a few key tools worth mentioning.  Here you can quickly edit the Brightness, Contrast, Ambiance, and Shadows of an image by moving your finger from left to right.

  • VSCO – VSCO is a free app created by professional photographers and designed for photographers. I recommend trying out their filters for a quick way to get a professional feel to your images. There are dozens of filters available and this will really depend on your brand. If you’re unsure, at $0.99 more, the S series – S1- S3 “Bright & Clean” is perfect for product photography. You can adjust how strong the filter is by adjusting the filter level from left to right.




  • Prisma – Prisma is a free app that can quickly turn your photos into artwork/graphics.  I wouldn’t recommend using this as a product photo since it doesn’t represent the product in its true form. However, this tool can be great for creating logos/graphics.
